Renovating railway lines is no easy task. A single meter of rail weighs no less than 60 kilograms. But the special train that is currently being used by Deutsche Bahn to renovate the high-speed line from Frankfurt to Cologne lifts the steel with ease. And not just one meter. But 120 at a time. The long rail replacement train does what its name suggests: It starts on the old, worn rails, lifts them along the way, pushes them a few centimeters to the side where they are later collected as scrap iron, and precisely lays new rails in their previous place, which should then last for years. The special machine from Vossloh, including the attached wagons, is around 200 meters long and uses its devices to bend the rails up and down as if they were made of rubber.
