Emergencies Ministry: 1,173 people drowned in Russian waters in two months of summer
In June and July, more than 2,000 incidents occurred in Russian water bodies, in which over a thousand people drowned. This told Head of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations Alexander Kurenkov.
“We managed to save almost half a thousand people, including 125 children. Unfortunately, 1,173 people drowned, including 275 children – these figures are higher than the year before,” he said.
According to Kurenkov, such tragedies most often occur in spontaneous swimming areas, where there are no lifeguards on duty, and the bottom relief is unknown. He emphasized that there are a huge number of reservoirs in Russia, and it is very difficult to ensure that everyone is on duty, which is why citizens need to take responsibility for themselves and their loved ones.
Earlier, leading specialist of the Phobos weather center Evgeny Tishkovets named the end date of the swimming season. According to him, the temperature in the reservoirs of Central Russia has already cooled to the lower limit of comfortable indicators, and the days of the swimming season are “numbered”.
