São Paulo, 23 – Rio Grande do Sul has begun work to establish sanitary barriers to contain the outbreak of Newcastle disease, confirmed on a commercial farm in the municipality of Anta Gorda, the State Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Sustainable Production and Irrigation (Seapi) said on Monday, 22. In a statement, the department reported that eight barriers were established, five within a 3-kilometer radius of the outbreak and three in the surveillance area, 10 kilometers from the outbreak.
According to the director of the Department of Animal Health Surveillance and Defense of Seapi, Rosane Collares, state agricultural inspectors and agricultural technicians, together with the Military Police, disinfect vehicles and control the movement of animals, poultry bedding, manure and other products that may carry the disease virus. In addition, the Secretariat met on Monday with the mayors of Anta Gorda, Putinga, Ilópolis, Relvado and Doutor Ricardo, which are within a 10-kilometer radius of the outbreak, in order to align measures.
In addition to the barriers, Seapi reported that it is conducting visits to properties within a 10-kilometer radius, which includes 870 establishments in total, including commercial and subsistence farms, it said in a statement. “The State Veterinary Service has already inspected 274 properties, including 14 meat farms located in the area. So far, we have not identified any evidence that we have any other birds with signs compatible with Newcastle disease,” said Collares.
To date, there have been no new suspected outbreaks of the disease and the three investigations that resulted in collections and laboratory analyses have had negative results. A collection of samples with a well-founded suspicion of avian respiratory and nervous syndrome, carried out in the municipality of Progresso, was sent to the Federal Laboratory of Agricultural Defense in Campinas (SP). “As soon as we complete all the activity and prove the absence of viral circulation, we will have a period of 90 days for international recognition of the return to the previous health status”, concludes the director.
