Hard or soft suitcase. Suitcase with wheels or backpack. What are the maximum dimensions of cabin luggage? What characteristics should I take into account when buying a durable suitcase? We have all had doubts like these at some point. In my case, after many years of travelling, I have found many answers by making mistakes and mistakes. Travelling through Europe and Africa for three months with a backpack on my shoulder was a wise decision, unlike travelling through Belize with a large suitcase that made transfers on small aircraft difficult. From experiences like these I know how important it is to make a correct choice of luggage and how useful it is to distinguish its characteristics. With this guide you will avoid confusion.
Checked baggage
Its dimensions must not exceed 158 linear centimetres (length, width and height), including handles and wheels. If the transport is by plane, the permitted weight must be checked with the company; it should not normally exceed 25 kilos. If this is exceeded, an extra fee is charged.
How to choose the right suitcase?
I evaluate the material, type of wheels, design and safety. Regarding the material, the two most popular options are hard-shell or soft-shell suitcases. The first are resistant, durable and waterproof, while the soft ones are lighter. For destinations with extreme climates, or if I need my belongings to be more protected, I choose the hard-shell ones.
I suggest those made of makrolon, a resistant and lightweight polycarbonate. As for wheels, I prefer the ones spinner, They slide smoothly and rotate 360 degrees. Regarding the design, I prioritize elastic compression straps (useful for holding clothes in place) and internal mesh or pockets to separate objects. Security is essential, and I suggest those that have an integrated TSA (Transportation Security Administration) lock, a global security system that facilitates customs inspections and prevents airport personnel from damaging the suitcase.
This type of suitcase is ideal for long trips with few movements or for winter crossings, since clothes take up more space. Some of the brands that I have tested and recommend are: Samsonite, Mappa, Eastpak and American Tourister.
And the ideal backpack?
Visiting many countries, constantly changing hotels and using different types of transport make a hiking backpack the best ally. It has many benefits: large capacity, rugged use and practicality. Cons: back pain can be proportional to everything the traveler needs to carry.
For an optimal purchase, it is best to prioritize design, materials, and capacity. Ergonomics is key; you have to look for the one that best adapts to the body of the person who is going to carry it. Support for the waist, back, and front straps are important because they help distribute the weight. Safety features are also basic: compartments, hidden pockets, locking closures, and access for placing padlocks.
Most of my packs are made from Cordura, a lightweight, durable nylon fabric that is breathable, easy to clean, and quick-drying. My preference is for 60- to 70-liter packs that weigh less than 5 pounds. If I’m traveling by plane, my trick is to put a cover on it, which protects it and prevents the straps from getting caught in the airport belts. It also allows for extra storage, in case I need it. Brands like Decathlon, Osprey, and Granite Gear are good options.
02. Hand luggage
The dimensions usually accepted by airlines are 55 x 40 x 25 centimeters and a weight of 10 kilos. Whether it is a suitcase or a backpack, it is a very practical piece of luggage because it adapts to any journey and is very functional for people who travel light.
How to choose the right carry-on suitcase?
The ones that have worked best for me are hybrids, because they have the strength of hard shells and the lightness of soft shells. These features are useful because they are moldable and expandable thanks to their fabric part, and many designs have external compartments to store items that need to be close at hand. 360 degree rotating wheels are still a must.
One of the brands specialized in hybrid luggage is Totto, but Samsonite, Cotopaxi, Horizn Studios, Eastpak and Thule also have excellent products.
And the ideal handbag?
This is one of the most controversial types of luggage due to its small size and the fact that it does not cost extra for airlines. It refers to bags, briefcases or small backpacks that fit under the seat of an airplane and that have an approximate size of 40 x 20 x 25 centimeters (depending on the airline).
It can be the best ally for carrying valuable items or items for immediate use. If my only luggage is going to be this, I look for expandable, versatile, lightweight backpacks with multiple compartments and padded handles. There are many options, such as the famous viral backpack from Amazon that has a very good capacity, USB input port and laptop compartment; as well as those from brands such as Cotopaxi, Samsonite and The North Face.
If I’m going to use it exclusively to store valuables, I’ll opt for one with enough compartments. A specific recommendation in this case: The Jumper, by the Brevitē brand. Knowing the luggage classifications, making a good purchase and choosing the right one translates into comfort and saving money.
