Politico: California Governor Newsom May Become Vice Presidential Candidate
California Governor Gavin Newsom may become the vice-presidential candidate of Kamala Harris, who is nominated by the Democratic Party for president, the newspaper reports. Politico with reference to sources.
“Newsom is often discussed as a potential candidate, but he would face a huge hurdle as Harris’s running mate for one simple reason: They are both from California. Under the 12th Amendment, members of the Electoral College vote for president and vice president, but one of them ‘shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves,'” the publication noted.
Newsom has already publicly endorsed Harris in the election campaign. He also said that the current American leader, Joe Biden, is “one of the most influential and selfless presidents.”
Earlier it became known that former US President Barack Obama and former Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi did not support the choice of Harris’s candidacy instead of Biden. In particular, Obama said that in the coming days the Democratic Party “will be sailing in uncharted waters.”
