The Attorney General of the Republic, Paulo Gonet, defended this Wednesday, the 19th, the carrying out of plea bargains with imprisoned people. For him, preventing the use of this means of obtaining evidence in investigations “does not make sense” as long as the arrest is legitimate and the accusation is approved by the Court. He spoke at an event organized by the National Association of Public Prosecutors (ANPR) and the Jota website.
“There is always pressure on the employee. If there is no pressure, there is no collaboration,” he said. “It is possible to present (to the prisoner): these are the consequences of your behavior, but you can mitigate these consequences if you help me with data, which we have no other means of accessing, by telling me what you know. This is more than legitimate, there is nothing to stop it,” he said.
Gonet added that the denunciation will never be the only proof. “The denunciation will be the provision of data so that the investigations can take place”, she stated.
The topic returned to the debate after the president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), included on the House’s agenda an urgent request for a bill that prohibits plea bargains and criminalizes their disclosure.
On Tuesday, the 18th, minister Alexandre de Moraes also defended the allegations. “We may like it or not, but it is an institute that is very successful. And legislation has tools to prevent abuse,” he said. Parliamentarians argue that denunciations are used as a “psychological instrument of pressure”.
