Monetary|Many of those who responded to HS’s survey will spend less money on vacation this year than in the past.
Prices with the increase, many people have had to tighten their purse strings. Spending your summer vacation may be defined by money, or actually the lack of it.
HS asked its readers how much money they have budgeted for spending the summer vacation. About half of those who responded to the survey said their budget was smaller this summer than in previous years.
One one of the respondents is a 51-year-old from Espoo Taru Storkivi. He also can’t afford to spend as much money on vacation as in previous years.
Storkivi has had to divide his vacation into a week or two. The decision is largely dictated by necessity, because this way, for example, vacation money is distributed more evenly between months.
The rent has been raised and living has become more expensive, says Storkivi. His salary has not kept up with the rise in prices.
“The salary is not enough to live on. Every month, you have to make fun of the flea sale or something similar.”
Storkivi says that he took out more bank loans so that he can offer his middle school-aged child a summer vacation. On his own vacation, he can’t afford to do anything.
“I’m probably sitting on my balcony and looking at the forest,” Storkivi describes.
According to Storkivi, there are few options, because domestic tourism is expensive. However, the plans are to spend a week at the family’s cabin and one night in a hotel with the daughter.
Storkive itself could not be less interested in camping.
“Being eaten by mosquitoes in the middle of nowhere is not for me. There are no options now. The daughter’s wishes come first.”
However, Storkivi does not even long for the fierce heat of southern or central Europe. If he had money to spend on vacation, he would go to Norway or Iceland for a couple of days.
One or two the defendant said that he could not afford to budget an extra cent for the summer vacation. You have to settle for the holiday with the same amount as for everyday life.
The summer holiday budget is exactly zero euros, money is not spent on anything other than necessities.
Many also said that they had saved everything possible so that it would be possible to go on a trip with their children.
The reasons for the savings line are largely similar to those at Storkive: low salary and expensive prices. A few also mention the interest rate and expenses related to the sudden illness of one or a loved one.
Gasoline, plane tickets, bus tickets and rental cars. There are many types of travel, as well as related expenses.
Few people want to spend their summer vacation in the corner of their home. At the other end of the spectrum of responses to HS’s survey are trips abroad that cost tens of tons. However, the budget of only a couple of respondents reaches the five-figure sum.
On the other hand, according to the respondents, several thousand euros were also required for traveling domestically, at least if you want to stay somewhere other than a tent.
A larger share of the budget than before is spent abroad due to the increased cost level in Finland. For example, how can a hotel night on a summer weekend cost 300 euros?
Maybe that’s why a couple of respondents plan to go camping.
Most of the money goes to food. The purpose is to travel around Finland, for example, with a tent, then it will run on gas.
