Thailand aims to increase visitor numbers to pre-Covid levels by revamping the border system.
Under the new rules that will come into effect later this year, citizens of 93 countries will receive a visa valid for 60 days on arrival, up from 57 countries and doubling the visa duration, which is currently 30 days.
The Southeast Asian country is also set to offer what it calls a “digital nomad” or “freelance employee” visa, for those who want to move there and work against a backdrop of beautiful scenery. The goal, the government said in a recent statement, is to “attract global talent.”
Successful applicants will be allowed to work remotely over 180-day stays through a five-year multiple entry permit.
Other beneficiaries of the visa could be people involved in “cultural activities” such as Muay Thai (kickbox), cooking, music festivals and medical treatment. The Thai government also said it would ease health insurance requirements for those with other visas or long-term permits.
About 28 million foreign visitors entered Thailand in 2023, a significant improvement compared to 11.5 million in 2022.
