WP: more than 2.7 thousand convicts entered service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine
More than 2.7 thousand convicted men entered service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). This number was revealed by the publication The Washington Post (WP).
It is noted that assault brigades are formed from former prisoners, under the command of ordinary military personnel. According to the Minister of Justice of Ukraine Denis Malyusk, it is planned to mobilize four thousand convicts in the first wave.
The publication spoke with several convicted military personnel. One of them, Edward, was sentenced to seven years and seven months in prison for armed assault. He explained his trip to the front with a desire to show that “there was a little humanity left in him.”
On May 17, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky signed a law allowing the mobilization of certain categories of prisoners into the Armed Forces of Ukraine. It is assumed that such a decision will allow Kyiv to conscript no more than 10-15 thousand convicts.
At the same time, it is prohibited to recruit persons convicted of terrorism, sexual crimes and fatal accidents.
