A sanctuary collapsed on the afternoon of this Sunday, 16th, after a landslide in Dom Pedro de Alcântara, on the north coast of Rio Grande do Sul. The accident would have occurred minutes before the celebration of a mass. There were no reports of injuries, but, as a precaution, the space was isolated shortly after the accident, according to preliminary information.
In a post on social media, the Sanctuary of Gruta Nossa Senhora de Lourdes reported that the collapse occurred around 4 pm. Through the publication, it is possible to get an idea of the extent of the damage at the site. At least one car was damaged as a result of the landslide.
“Our Grotto sanctuary in Dom Pedro de Alcântara-RS has just collapsed after a landslide, minutes before the start of the Holy Mass, but EVERYONE IS SAFE”, he says. According to the publication, there were people at the scene at the time of the accident, but they managed to get out in time.
The official profile of the sanctuary also advises that people do not go to the location, as there is a risk of further accidents. The report tried to obtain more information from the Rio Grande do Sul Fire Department, but has not yet received any feedback.
In a note published on social media, the city council of Dom Pedro de Alcântara confirmed the collapse of the cave and reiterated that “the landslide caused considerable material damage, but, fortunately, there were no reports of injuries”.
“The Torres Fire Department promptly arrived at the scene to assess the situation. The State Civil Defense contacted Mayor Alexandre Model, and the Department of Works took the necessary measures to isolate the area”, informed the ministry.
As an additional measure, the city hall stated that security guards will be placed on site to ensure that no one accesses the sanctuary, aiming for everyone’s safety. “Tomorrow (Monday, 17th), during the day, a detailed assessment of the site will be carried out to determine the next measures”, he adds.
In a video published by the city hall’s official profile about three weeks ago on Instagram, it is possible to see what the Sanctuary of Gruta Nossa Senhora de Lourdes looked like before the collapse. The space was opened in February 1950, close to the cave that gained symbolism after young people found there, while climbing, a small image of Our Lady.
