In the 2024 European elections, 720 deputies will be elected, among which Spain contributes 61. These are two more than the 59 seats occupied by Spanish representatives in the outgoing parliament and seven more than those elected in 2019 (before Brexit).
The Popular Party has 22 MEPs. That’s nine more than I counted before. The PSOE is the second party with the most votes and has 20 representatives in Europe, one less. Ciudadanos disappears from the list and Se Acabó La Fiesta enters with three deputies.
The representatives of the party headed by Alvise Pérez, in their first electoral appearance, are three of the 28 incorporations (another 54% repeat the position) to a group that this time includes 31 men and 30 women.
Just before these elections, the group of Spanish MEPs was for the first time made up of more women than men (30 out of 29 out of a total of 59).
In January 2020, Spain added five MEPs (going from 54 to 59), by dividing the seats that the British left when they left the Chamber.
Spain’s entry into the European Union became effective in 1986 and the first European elections in the territory were held in 1987, with a wide participation (68.5%).
In fact, except for 2019, this year’s participation is higher than that of the European elections of the last 20 years: 2014 (43.81%), 2009 (44.87%) and 2004 (45.14%).
Regarding age, this new group of Spanish MEPs has an average of 51 years old. Alvise Pérez (SALF) and Isabel Serra (Vamos), both new to the European Parliament, are the youngest at 34 years old.
At the top, Pilar del Castillo repeats at 71 years old.
The popular one, a native of Nador (Morocco), is one of the two Spanish MEPs who was born outside the country. She is accompanied by the socialist Javier Moreno, born in Geneva (Switzerland).
In European elections, voters elect their representatives in a system of closed lists and a single constituency (although depending on the voting location, the ballots change to show candidates from the community in question first).
