The Danish Prime Minister, Mette Fredriksen, was attacked this evening by a man in the center of Copenhagen. This was announced by the prime minister’s office, specifying that the attack took place in Kultorvet, a crowded square in the center of the capital. The attacker was arrested, but the motive for the attack which took place on the eve of the European elections is not yet known.
In a note, the prime minister said she was shocked by the incident, but assured that she was unharmed. The Social Democratic leader, who has led the country since 2019, has been actively campaigning for the Social Democratic leader in the European elections, Christel Schaldemose.
In a statement to the Danish news agency Ritzau, Schaldemose specified that the prime minister’s presence in the square where she was attacked was not linked to her election campaign.
