After Emmanuel Macron’s openness on the use of Western weapons against strategic targets on Russian soil, American President Joe Biden is also reportedly considering revoking the limits imposed on Kiev on the use of sent war material. Not only that: the White House would like to punish China for having supplied technology to Moscow. The Washington Post writes this, underlining how these moves would represent a significant escalation of Biden’s “carefully calibrated” policy.
The situation on the battlefield is critical and Western leaders are trying to raise the level of support for Kiev, even if the positions between countries in the EU and NATO remain distant. Canada has not placed any restrictions on the transfer of weapons to Ukraine, Ottawa said. Likewise Finland: «Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations. This also includes attacks on military targets in the aggressor’s territory that are necessary for self-defense,” recalls Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen. Poland will also allow Ukraine to use its weapons to strike targets on Russia’s territory.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk then announced that a 200-meter buffer zone will be re-established on the border with Belarus, where “all necessary resources” will be transferred. Italy, however, remains firm in its position. The Minister of Defense, Guido Crosetto, underlines that the government has not moved an inch compared to the criteria established by the 2022 legislative decree on the sending of weapons to Kiev of the previous government. Regarding the details of the supplies, the minister points out that in Italy, at the beginning of the conflict, secrecy rules were decided, but that they could change in the future: «I am thinking of doing what some nations do, which have not kept everything secret but only a part”, explained Crosetto.
The news from the front and the threats from Moscow do not lower the guard level. Then there is the unknown Donald Trump who could find himself in the White House in November: during a fundraising event for his election campaign in a hotel in New York, he is said to have said that if he had been president “he would have bombed Moscow in response to the invasion of Ukraine and would attack Beijing if China invaded Taiwan.” But between now and November the scenario could change radically: in between there are the appointments of the new EU and NATO leaders, not to mention the legal affairs of the American tycoon.
