The 500 hybrid produced in Mirafiori from the first quarter of 2026 and then a new hybrid version of the Compass in Melfi. These are among the innovations announced last Monday by the CEO of Stellantis, Carlos Tavares, after the meeting with the unions at the Centro Stile. But not only that: the group then announced that it will start a process of generational renewal of the workforce, with the hiring of young workers especially in Mirafiori.
Peace made between government and Stellantis? It’s too early to tell. First of all, because we are at the beginning of a long journey towards the target of one million vehicles produced in Italy by 2030. It was the same giant born from the merger of FCA and PSA that underlined the fact that the ambition shared with the Italian Government will require of a favorable business environment, currently conditioned by the uncertainties of electrification and strong competition with new market operators.
And then because yesterday the Minister of Business and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso actually returned to the attack: “I hope – he said – that Tavares has illustrated a development plan with new electric models, but also hybrid ones starting from the factory of Mirafiori, Melfi, Polignano, Cassino and that over time some other car manufacturers can be established next to these, so that car production returns to a level capable of supporting the Italian automotive supply chain, which is a pride of Made in Italy in the world”.
Now, to try to understand what is happening and what the real forces in the field are, at present we can say that 5 models are expected in Melfi in two years, starting from spring 2025 with the Ds and then the hybrid Compass. In Cassino confirm Giulia in 2026 and Stelvio in 2025 and a third model in 2027. Finally, in Pomigliano the Panda could be extended until 2029. Will it be enough to reach the million cars produced in Italy? It depends on many things. Especially on what these cars will be like and whether they will sell as a result. It seems like a joke but it isn’t: without customers you can’t go anywhere.
