Abu Dhabi Health Services Company – SEHA achieved a distinguished medical achievement represented by the success of its subsidiary, Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, in performing a difficult heart surgery on a 3-month-old infant who was diagnosed with a complex congenital heart disease called atrioventricular transition canal. Baby Selena suffered from severe complications and symptoms, including shortness of breath since birth, multiple admissions to the neonatal intensive care unit and the pediatric intensive care unit due to heart failure, in addition to recurring lung infections that required artificial respiration.
When Selena arrived at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, her weight was only 2.3 kilograms, and she was unable to breathe without the help of a ventilator. Her symptoms became more severe as a result of respiratory pneumonia resulting from her suffocation during breastfeeding, which hindered her ability to gain weight. The surgical team that performed the surgery was led by Dr. Antoine Gergius, a pediatric cardiologist, and Dr. Alexander Omelchenko, a pediatric cardiac surgery specialist.
