The regional spokeswoman for the World Food Programme, Abeer Atifa, warned that the current food stocks in Rafah, Deir al-Balah and Khan Yunis are not sufficient for more than 4 days due to the closure of the crossings. She described the situation as dangerous and threatens the outbreak of a comprehensive disaster and famine in the north, which may extend to the southern regions. .
Atifa explained, in statements to Al-Ittihad, that closing the crossings puts the residents of Gaza facing an unknown fate, as they suffer from a severe shortage of food and basic medical supplies. In light of these harsh conditions, the international community must move quickly and take urgent measures to open the crossings and facilitate… The entry of humanitarian aid, stressing the need to put an end to the suffering of the people of Gaza, and provide them with the necessary support, before it is too late.
Reports by World Food Program staff in Gaza confirmed that the scale of the humanitarian crisis is escalating, and the situation is worsening with increasing cases of hunger and malnutrition.
Relief and humanitarian organizations in the Gaza Strip are facing a major crisis due to the continued closure of crossings and the failure of aid to enter since the escalation of military operations in Rafah from the beginning of May, and demands are increasing not to use humanitarian aid as a tool in any military escalation.
Meanwhile, yesterday, aid trucks coming from Egypt began entering Gaza through the Kerem Shalom border crossing between Israel and the Gaza Strip, according to what Egyptian media reported.
The media reported that about 200 trucks of humanitarian aid set off from the Rafah crossing to the Kerem Shalom crossing. In preparation for entering the Gaza Strip.
She stated, “The movement inside the Rafah crossing has returned again after it stopped, especially after the Israeli occupation took control of the Rafah crossing from the Palestinian side,” noting that the trucks carry on board many food and medical aids and bags of flour, in addition to the movement of four trucks of fuel to supply Medical sectors and hospitals within the sector.
She confirmed that each truck heading to the Kerem Shalom crossing to cross into the Gaza Strip carries between 15 and 20 tons of aid.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) announced earlier that it does not have any humanitarian aid to distribute to the population in the Gaza Strip.
Khaled Zayed, head of the Egyptian Red Crescent in Al-Arish, where the bulk of the aid allocated to the besieged Palestinian enclave arrives, said: “The aid convoy is expected to cross into Gaza today (yesterday).”
The Rafah crossing, which was the main outlet for humanitarian aid and commercial supplies to Gaza since the beginning of the war, has remained closed for nearly three weeks after Israel took control of the Palestinian side of it and escalated the military attack on May 6.
