Premiership, Iezzi (Lega) denies tensions with FdI: “Absolutely favourable”
Giorgia Meloni returns to speed up the premiership again. The opposition is already on a war footing. But the prime minister must also guarantee the support of the League’s allies. Already “burned” in the recent past by the failure to approve the third mandate for regional governors. But they are now putting another strong point on the scale: autonomy. The political news speaks of “tensions” and a “fragile truce” between the allies. The oppositions, more openly, of “exchange”. But from the Northern League deputy Igor Iezzi a full openness to the reform so dear to Meloni seems to be arriving: “We are absolutely in favor of putting the people back at the center of important decisions.” The interview
The premiership: the most discussed constitutional reform in republican history. What do you think?
Unfortunately it is not the most discussed in republican history because in our country every time we try to amend the Constitution there are incredible controversies, it seems that it cannot be changed and the forces that defend the status quo are always ready to protest. Going into detail, I am absolutely in favor of this in the sense that we believe it is necessary to put the people, the citizens, back at the center of important decisions. I believe that the most important thing is to decide on one’s own government and I believe that the Premiership is the best tool to allow citizens to decide by whom to be governed without leaving this decision in the hands of the parties in the secret rooms of Rome. From this point of view we are absolutely in favour, keeping in mind that this is already a form of mediation as we were in favor of forms of presidentialism and semi-presidentialism. We carried out the premiership exclusively to meet the opposition’s requests, perhaps this was a mistake but an important attempt was made to seek a form of dialogue.
For a long time Salvini seemed to link the fate of the reform of the premiership to that of the third mandate for regional governors, which however did not find support in the Brothers of Italy. In what spirit is the League preparing to vote for the premiership today?
In reality Salvini has never held a position of this type. Obviously we are the promoters of autonomy and we are in favor of the third mandate, it is a battle that we have fought and that we will fight in the future if the conditions exist but unfortunately today we have to take note that they do not persist. In politics we need to take note of the numbers: there is no majority on this issue so there is no point in continuing to present a text on the third mandate to have it rejected. If we were then to understand and understand that conditions change within the majority, and perhaps also within the opposition with a change of line on the part of the Democratic Party, then we could take it forward. But we never linked the two situations. It’s not that the premiership is approved because the third term is approved. We continue to be in favor of the measure
What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of the premiership?
In terms of advantages, I believe that this will also lead to more stable governments, which is one of our country’s shortcomings. If they want to invest in a country, entrepreneurs need to have stability from that point of view. The fear that a government changes every six months, as has happened in past years, certainly does not lead to attracting investments. As regards the disadvantages, in my opinion we need to focus on the role of Parliament. I have often heard Renzi speak of the premiership as a sort of “mayor of Italy”. And that’s fine, because the mayors’ experience works. However, we must be careful not to transform Parliament into a City Council because – alas – the latter does not have a great capacity to influence the choices of an administration
