Russia again attacked Kharkiv, the second largest city in Ukraine, this Saturday morning (25). Two guided missiles hit a construction materials hypermarket, killing at least two people and leaving 24 others injured.
According to the mayor of Kharkiv, Igor Terejov, there are still a large number of people missing, as around 200 people worked and shopped there. “This is pure terrorism,” he said on his social media.
The attack also triggered a large fire in the store, where there was a significant amount of flammable materials – making the work of firefighters difficult, according to Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko.
“At the same time, there is a constant threat of repeated enemy bombings,” Klymenko said, referring to a common expedient in recent Russian attacks.
In the last two weeks, the Russians began a ground offensive in the Kharkiv region, opening a new front in the war between the two countries. The city is an important industrial hub, in addition to having a railway junction and hosting a nuclear research center.
The attack on the hypermarket comes one day after President Volodymir Zelensky stated that the situation in the city was under control.
Faced with the new aggression, Zelensky once again drew the West’s attention to the country’s deficiencies in relation to its air defense apparatus.
“If Ukraine had sufficient air defense systems and modern combat aircraft, Russian attacks like this would have been impossible. And that is why we appeal to all leaders, to all states: we need a significant improvement in this regard to destroy the Russian terrorists”, said the president on his social networks.
In another post, he reinforced the appeal: “Every day we ask the world to provide us with air defense and save our population. Every decision that is not made to support us results in the loss of our people.”
