HS10|HS critics chose the most interesting books of the past weeks. Paul Auster’s last remaining novel came out on top.
Information by Paul Auster death at his home in Brooklyn came on May Day. He was 77 years old.
His newly translated short novel Baumgartner tells, at least in part, about a literary man like its author, who in his seventies begins to stumble even in his home. The body’s strength weakens, and it is not necessarily better to trust one’s own intellect anymore.
Although Auster is not the same as his last work Baumgartner’s the title character, and of course the novelty should not be blamed on the autobiography, the spiritual testament of a writer who has had a long and rich career can be seen in the work.
A novel an intelligent, professorial man, states that he has dedicated his entire life’s work to answering the question of what it means to be alive – although at the same time he has always known that the task is impossible.
But: the shooters of certain truths are only fools! Those who think they can see a person with their eyes.
The opposition to absolute certainties belongs to the unwritten additional clauses of Auster’s testament.
Baumgartner spirit, that in trying to say the unreachable lies the essence of humanity.
The last ones of the domestic news of the week emerged Tuomas Niskakankaan thriller, Sinikka Vuola and Heikki Kännön novels, Janne Holmström poetry collection, Herman Raivion essays as well as Anna-Sofia Berneri and Heikki Jungmanin information books.
