A video that has gone viral on social media in recent hours has outraged Germany. In the recording, which lasts only a few seconds, a group of young men and women shout: “Foreigners away” and “Germany to the Germans” to the tune of the song L’amour toujours by the Turin DJ Gigi d’Agostino, very popular in Germany. A man appears to be simulating Hitler’s mustache on his upper lip with his fingers. Another gives the Nazi salute with his arm outstretched. They celebrate, they drink, the atmosphere is exuberant. The video, original as confirmed by the Schleswig-Holstein police investigating the case, was apparently filmed a few days ago, during the Pentecost holidays, in front of the Pony Club in Kampen, one of the most exclusive clubs on the island of Sylt, the holiday destination for German VIPs. According to the Schwäbische newspaper, the video has been online since Tuesday afternoon.
The reactions on social media were immediate: the lawyer Niema Movassat, former deputy of the left-wing Linke party in the Bundestag, wrote on X/Twitter: «Here the German upper class celebrates on Sylt shouting “foreigners out”. Absolutely disgusting. It is proof of what is possible in 2024 without shame. We have known since 1933 that the German upper class has always had a weakness for fascism.” The Deputy Prime Minister of Schleswig-Holstein Monika Heinol, Verdi, was horrified by the video: «It is imperative that our Land acts, that there is information and that there are consequences». Tarek Al-Wazir, a Green politician who was minister of economy and energy in Hesse, tweeted: «These “great talents” should have tried for a month to do the work that would otherwise have been done by “foreigners”. and that it would have made their life possible in the late Roman decadence. In the long term it would certainly help.”
Professor Carlo Masala, professor of international politics at the University of Munich, added: «The irony of this matter is that these scruffy rich people probably have foreign au pairs at home, a foreign cleaning lady, and their Drinks on Sylt were also served by migrants, and expensive hotel rooms were cleaned by foreign workers.” The managers of the Pony Club, the legendary glamorous venue on Sylt where the champagne corks pop without interruption, have distanced themselves from the incident with a post on Instagram in which they declare they are “deeply shocked” by the video, “Let’s take the distance themselves from any type of racism and discrimination”, and announce legal action against those responsible for the incident.
