NATO BOMBS PRISON. Rome. The Atlantic Alliance attacks against a prison in the city of Istok, in the Serbian province of Kosdovo, caused the death of some 19 people and injured dozens. According to information from Pristina, 29 people, including a prison officer, died in the Allied attacks on the Dubrava prison. However, the death toll could increase in the coming hours as Allied attacks continued, making it difficult to search for bodies in the remains of the prison. The attack on the Istok prison, which had already been hit in recent days, when three prisoners died, is “legitimate” because the building was part of a military security complex, NATO spokesmen said. Serbian authorities reported that members of the rebel Kosovo Liberation Army were being held in the Istok prison. According to the Tanjug source, a fuel tank of the Yugopetrol company was attacked, injuring seven people, including four children. Tanjug also reported that allied missiles hit areas where there are military airports. A spokesperson for the Yugoslav Foreign Ministry said that crimes against humanity and bombings must end if an end to the crisis in Kosov is to be negotiated. The embassies of Iraq, Libya and Pakistan in Belgrade were damaged during an alliance bombing, which also hit a hospital, where four patients died.
