Luis de Vega, reporter and photographer for EL PAÍS, was awarded this Friday with the XXXIX Cirilo Rodríguez Journalism Prize. This award is intended for correspondents and special envoys of Spanish media abroad and is considered one of the most prestigious in Spain. It is convened annually by the Association of Journalists of Segovia (APS). The jury has valued the mastery with the pen and the camera of Luis de Vega’s deployment during the last months in Ukraine, Israel and Gaza, where he currently carries out his work with chronicles and graphic material. When collecting the award, De Vega defended a journalistic exercise based on “stories from the street”, told with “rigor, respect and honesty”, reports Efe.
De Vega has been a special envoy in the Ukraine war and is currently covering the war between Israel and Gaza. He has worked as a journalist and photographer in more than 30 countries for 25 years. He has covered wars, famines, earthquakes, coups d’état, events and migratory movements such as the migratory route from Africa to Europe or the war in Libya (2011). In 2022 he was recognized with the Madrid Press Association Award for Best Journalist of the Year for his “tireless coverage of the Russian invasion.” This is the third time that he has been a finalist for the Cirilo Rodríguez Award.
The journalists Anna Bosch, from RTVE, and Sara Gómez Armas, correspondent of Agencia EFE in Israel, were also finalists for this award.
The jury is made up of a representation of the International sections of the main Spanish media and the winner of the last edition, Miguel Ángel de la Fuente. He will meet again to deliberate on May 17, coinciding with the date of the delivery ceremony at the Parador de Turismo in Segovia.
The prize is worth 8,000 euros for the winner and the exclusive piece The Earth Lensdesigned and made by the Real Fábrica de Cristales de la Granja, as well as 2,000 euros for each of the two finalists and a similar piece on a smaller scale.
