The tragedy of the rains that has produced hundreds of fatalities and more than a million homeless in the rich region of Rio Grande do Sul and in the emblematic capital of Porto Alegre, which has become a sad scene of horror, begins to unfold. be analyzed under two aspects that we could classify as angels and demons.
And in the classic kaleidoscope of these natural tragedies, the best and the worst of people are mixed. The human angels who risk their lives to save those of others become more visible than ever. They are the ones who share the little they have left with those who have lost everything, even the house. The scenes described by the special envoys of the media have called these volunteers “human angels” who risk their lives to save people who are drowning in the waters or divide the last piece of bread they have left with the one carrying days without eating.
This is what has led Lula, who has a special sympathy for Nobel Prize winners, to affirm that today the people of Brazil “deserve the Nobel Prize for solidarity.”
But along with this river of solidarity carried out by those “angels of solidarity”, there exists according to Lula a “perverse minority” which he has defined as “gangs of evildoers.” He was referring to the criticisms and fake news disseminated on social networks to, according to him, discredit the intense work of the Government in the extraordinary aid that it is offering to the region that votes the least, the cradle of Bolsonarism, of the most right-wing and extreme right-wing entities and declared enemy of the left. It is the religion where the wealth of agriculture dominates and the evangelical movement reveals its strength, which Lula cannot conquer even by showering them with perks.
It is true that as in all natural tragedies and wars, along with the human angels who sacrifice their own lives to save those of strangers, there always appear the jackals who take advantage of the troubled river, of the misfortune of others to make their fortune. But as in other similar cases inside and outside Brazil, there are also, and people do not stop confirming it, political jackals. Those who take advantage of natural tragedies not only to enrich themselves but to promote themselves with a view to the future.
In this symptomatic case of Brazil, it is true that Lula’s Government has acted with greater speed and competence, with extensive economic aid and with its several visits to the site of the tragedy, unlike in past governments, where the cities were abandoned to their own devices. Good luck to the simple local chiefs, many of whom ended up condemned for having enriched themselves with the misfortune of others.
This time there is no doubt that Lula has acted quickly to help the Government and for the first time has created an extraordinary minister to take charge of the serious problem of rebuilding the destroyed region. The only problem is that instead of choosing someone from the place, he has chosen his already leftist minister, Paulo Pimenta, from the PT, whom Lula plans to launch as a possible candidate for governor for 2026 for this State of Rio Grande do Sul, which As the sociologist professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) has written: “This decision raises suspicions about the real interests behind the creation of the extraordinary ministry, casting doubt on the effectiveness of actions that will be taken on its management with a view to its possible candidacy for said government.”
There are those who have ironically recalled that if in the tragedy that Brazil is experiencing, the legions of angels who are even risking their lives to save others without asking them if they are from the right or the left are indisputable and deserve all the Nobel Prizes, they also continue, As in previous tragedies, alive and well the demons of politics that slip into the consideration of placing their partisan interests against the pain of those who lose everything, even their lives. Sad, most documented ever.
