Whales|Killer whale attacks on boats have been reported for several years, but the behavior still cannot be explained with certainty.
Set a killer whale attacked a sailboat in the Strait of Gibraltar. According to Reuters reporting on the matter, the whales pushed the boat into the Moroccan waters and sank it.
There were two people on board the 15-meter sailboat at the time of the attack. They say that they felt how the hull of the boat was hit, after which water started pouring in.
A nearby oil tanker picked up the passengers and transported them to Gibraltar. The Spanish rescue authorities informed about it on Monday.
At issue is the latest attack by killer whales in the Strait of Gibraltar.
According to experts, the strait separating Europe and Africa has developed its own sub-population, which includes about 15 killer whales.
According to the research group Atlantic Orca Working Group (GTOA), killer whales have made contact with people in the area hundreds of times since their attacks were reported in the spring of 2020.
Scientists do not agree on what causes killer whales to attack boats.
One popular theory suggests it’s playful curiosity, another says the attacks are a social fad. Some believe that killer whales attack those they believe are competing for the same food.
