With the intense rains that fell again in several municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul on Saturday night (11), including in the capital, Porto Alegre, the Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul issues new alerts for the population to look for safe areas.
Among the regions at “risk of severe flooding” are the Taquari and Caí valleys, according to the most recent Civil Defense alerts. “Those who live in nearby regions, or in areas with a history of flooding or floods, should leave in advance, in an orderly manner, looking for a safe place to stay”, advises the agency.

On Saturday night, the governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite, warned that the Taquari, Jacuí, dos Sinos and Caí rivers should rise again, after a slight decline in recent days. “Spread this information,” asked Eduardo Leite in a video published on official government accounts on social media.
In the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, the mayor of Canoas, Jairo Jorge, also made an appeal, this Sunday (12), for those who returned home after the water receded to leave places susceptible to flooding again. “Leave immediately because the water will return, and the person will probably have to be rescued [se ficar]”, he said in a video published on the city hall’s Instagram account.
According to the state government’s most recent report, so far 76,399 people have been rescued after being stranded in different flood points, in one of the 446 affected municipalities. 10,555 animals were also saved.

Civil Defense warns people affected by the floods not to cross flooded areas on foot or by car. “Seek information from your city’s Civil Defense. In case of emergency, call 193/190”, recommends the agency.
According to official data, so far 143 deaths caused by bad weather, with floods and flash floods in Rio Grande do Sul, since the end of April. There are 131 people missing, and 537,380 have been left homeless. In total, 81,285 are in more than 700 temporary shelters spread across the state.
