The platform is integrated with the operating room monitors and loads the entire history of previous procedures into the database.
A Anestechbased in Santa Catarina, created a artificial intelligence capable of alerting anesthetists to a threat of hypotension or a drop in pressure in a patient undergoing surgery. Called Axel, it is integrated with the operating room monitors and loads the entire history of previous procedures into the database.
The alert is made approximately 20 minutes before the complication occurs. Before innovation, the prediction of surgical problems depended solely on the accurate and careful monitoring of the anesthesia professional. It is his responsibility to document detailed information about the patient undergoing surgery every few minutes: from vital signs to position on the operating table.
Anestech’s software put aside the anesthetist’s paper and pen to initially make room for a digital medical record. Data filling is automated based on pre-anesthetic exams. And, when integrated into the surgical system to analyze information in real time using artificial intelligence, it can calculate the patient’s probability of having future complications.
“It’s a statistical analysis. The anesthetist needs this support for decision making”explains Diogenes Silvaone of the founders and CEO of Anestech.
The platform works as a Waze, explains Diógenes. Before leaving home, it is already possible to visualize the path that will have to be taken. In the middle of it, the application usually warns: there is “holes in the road”.
“We need to start predicting outcomes based on the history of actions. Sometimes something happens 30 days after discharge. These predictions made by our software give more time for a counterattack to be prepared,” she said.
A Brazilian Israelite Society Albert Einstein Hospital is one of Anestech’s main investors. Invested R$165 thousand in 2015; around 6 years later, she remained in the investment round and together with other businesspeople invested R$3 million in the company.
The brand works with artificial intelligence focused on the health sector, prioritizing the work of anesthetists.
- customers – at least 5,000 hospitals across Brazil use the system;
- How much does AI cost – varies depending on the average monthly number of surgeries. Each procedure costs around US$1.5 (at a price of R$5.07, the value is R$7.60 per procedure);
- invoicing – Anestech raised R$5 million last year. It went from the Simples Nacional tax regime (for those who earn R$4.8 million per year) to real profit – a regime that accepts higher collection limits. The objective in 2024 is to double revenue;
- inspiration on ChatGPT – The company is now working on a chatbot capable of describing the historical information of each patient, doctor, medical record or prescription in a conversational format. It also describes the consumption of medicines and may suggest a possible conclusion of the case.

Diógenes analyzes that there will be no replacement of the anesthetist by artificial intelligence. Technical capacity combined with a technological strategy puts the professional’s line of reasoning on a more accurate path, he explains.
“We have human limitations, equipment limitations, ventilation limitations, machine limitations, pharmaceutical limitations. So we improve and equip ourselves with better things to make the procedure safer and more comfortable. Cognitive support brings more accuracy to procedures”he said.
The businessman believes that technology will become obsolete over time, but the essence of human care will remain unchanged. According to him, even with the help of machines in data analysis, the anesthetist continues to perform his essential function: reducing the patient’s pain and making the procedure safer.
