The UN General Assembly approved this Friday (10) a resolution to call for Palestine to be recognized as a full member of the organization.
There were 143 votes in favor of the resolution and nine against, including those from the United States and Israel; 25 countries abstained. The measure does not represent full Palestinian membership in the UN, a measure that would have to be approved by the United Nations Security Council.
In April, the United States vetoed a proposed resolution in the collegiate to admit Palestine as a full member state of the UN. Since 2012, Palestine has been a non-member observer state of the United Nations.
Despite not representing full membership, the resolution approved by the UN General Assembly this Friday grants additional rights to Palestine in the United Nations, as it allows its full participation in debates, propose agenda items and have representatives elected to committees.
This Friday’s vote outraged Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan. “As many of you hate Jews, you really don’t care that Palestinians are not peace-loving,” he joked, according to information from the Reuters agency.
During the session, Erdan, in protest, placed a copy of the United Nations charter in a paper shredder.
