Aden (Al-Ittihad)
Yesterday, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees announced that 37,000 people have been affected by floods in Yemen since the beginning of this year. The UNHCR’s “Shelter Cluster” said, via the “X” platform: “The devastating rains and floods in Yemen affected more than 37,000 people this year.”
She added: “We quickly expanded the scope of the emergency response, and helped about 9,000 people by providing shelter and basic household supplies, and our partners are working tirelessly to provide more assistance.”
The “Shelter” group affirmed its commitment, in cooperation with its partners, to provide more assistance to those affected by the floods, while confirming that climate changes exacerbate the severity of these natural disasters.
The rainy season in Yemen usually begins in mid-March every year, according to previous UN reports.
Yemen suffers from severe infrastructure weakness, and therefore the effects of floods increase the tragedy of the population.
In another context, about 200 humanitarian organizations, including UN agencies, yesterday launched an urgent appeal to provide $2.3 billion for the humanitarian response plan in Yemen for the year 2024, warning of “serious consequences” if the necessary funding is not secured.
This came on the eve of a meeting of senior European officials in Brussels to discuss the humanitarian situation in Yemen, which is facing one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world, according to the United Nations.
