In 20 years, Feira Preta stopped being a thrift store in Vila Madalena, grew, expanded its initial focus – selling products from black entrepreneurs – and became an international event to value black culture through entrepreneurship, entertainment and art . This year’s edition confirms this expansion by occupying Ibirapuera Park for the first time, between the 3rd, 4th and 5th of May.
Three stages with shows by Marcelo D2, Preta Gil, Tasha and Tracie, Luedji Luna, Majur and Martn’ália, as well as a fair with 182 entrepreneurs, a record in the event’s history, occupy more than 200 thousand m² with the expectation of receiving 50 thousand visitors.
According to the organizers, it is the largest black culture and creative economy fair in Latin America, with trends in Afro-Brazilian culture in entertainment, music, fashion, design, architecture, literature, gastronomy and visual arts, such as exhibitions at the Afrobrasil Museum .
Normally held in November, the event has changed dates. “The change marks our commitment to focusing on the interests and needs of our community throughout the year, including in November”, says Adriana Barbosa, founder of the festival and director of PretaHub, a black entrepreneurship accelerator and organizer of the event.
In addition to the free spaces (subject to a capacity of 2500 to 3000 people), there will also be a ticket charge in some sectors, with prices between R$40 and R$100. Adriana states that the collection serves to pay for the work of professionals who work in the event – 90% are black.
Technology takes the event to the metaverse
In recent years, the event has increasingly attracted African countries. This year, Burkina Faso is the guest. The West African country will participate in different spaces with a delegation of 25 people, including entrepreneurs, fashion designers, educators, artists and the government. Nigeria, Colombia, United Kingdom, United States, Costa Rica and Portugal will also be present.
This year’s fair will use technology to try to democratize access to attractions and products. The event will be broadcast through the metaverse, with immersive and gamified technologies for those accessing the event via cell phone, computer and tablets on the Metamazon Technologies platform.
One of the actions is the “Zumbi dos Palmares” map in Fortnite, one of the most famous online electronic games in the world, created in partnership with Salve Games. The map can be accessed for free on several platforms. The launch is a milestone for representation and inclusion in the games industry.
Event started in a thrift store in Vila Madalena
Adriana Barbosa, 47 years old, started her business out of necessity. In 2002, with an Event Management diploma in hand, but unemployed, the São Paulo native and a friend started selling pieces of clothing that were lying in the closet. The idea evolved into a traveling thrift store at several alternative fairs in São Paulo.
Until a trawler in Vila Madalena, in the west zone, took away almost all of its stock. To get back on her feet, she had the idea of focusing her sales on black people. Adriana had already seen the potential of black exhibitors and decided to go for it.
With the support of R$3,500 from Unilever, which was launching the first products for black skin in the country, it brought together 40 exhibitors at an event at Praça Benedito Calixto, in Pinheiros. Feira Preta was born. There were six thousand people in the first edition alone.
The fair grew. In 21 years, more than 250 thousand people and 3 thousand entrepreneurs from Brazil and other Latin American countries have passed through there. Sales of products and services from Afro-entrepreneurs generated more than R$15 million.
