The cause of the cable car accident in Antalya could have been corrosion of metal structures. Turkish Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunç announced this on April 13.
“The preliminary report prepared by a team of experts assesses that the incident occurred due to the fact that fasteners located at the attachment points of the support cableway supports were corroded,” he wrote on the social network X (formerly Twitter, banned on Russia).
Also, the pulley systems located on the supports of the supporting cableway were damaged due to the fact that the support of the supporting mast was broken at the attachment point.
According to the minister, a decision was made to detain 13 suspects, including those responsible for the technical condition of the funicular.
He also wished a speedy recovery to all those injured.
The Antalya funicular accident occurred on April 12. The incident happened on a 605-meter cable car going up the mountain from Konyaalti beach. As a result of the incident, one person was killed and 17 were injured. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is “closely monitoring all developments related to this painful incident.” The Antalya Chief Prosecutor's Office has launched a judicial investigation into the incident.
