James Elder, spokesman for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), said that Gaza is on the “brink of destruction and famine.”
Elder explained, in a press statement yesterday, that “the Palestinians are struggling to survive under very harsh conditions.”
He added: “There was great hope for a ceasefire after the UN Security Council resolution, and everywhere I went in Gaza, a ceasefire was what people said and begged for most. Therefore, there was hope, but this hope was crushed by the sound of bombs.”
Elder said, “Israel attacked the city of Rafah, which had previously been declared a safe zone, just two days after the UN Security Council decided to cease fire.”
He continued: “I was in a hospital in Rafah and there were children who were seriously injured due to the bombing, and despite the ceasefire decision, the bombing continues without stopping throughout the day.”
He added: “This decision must be put into effect. We need to ensure a ceasefire so that children and families who have endured this pain for many months know that they will actually be able to wake up in the morning.” Israel insists on invading Rafah despite increasing international warnings of catastrophic repercussions, in light of the presence of about 1.4 million displaced people there.
