Professor Egorov: 100 thousand Russians fall ill with incurable glaucoma every year
Every year in Russia, about one hundred thousand people fall ill with glaucoma, a disease that leads to blindness and is still incurable. The President of the Russian Glaucoma Society, Professor Evgeny Egorov, spoke about this, adding that the number of patients with a similar diagnosis is growing, reports RIA News.
“This figure of one hundred thousand people can increase due to detection and due to the fact that people began to live a little longer. It will grow, but gradually,” the professor explained.
According to the doctor, it is possible to diagnose glaucoma in the early stages only in 25 percent of cases. This is because previously there was at least one specialized office per 300 thousand people, but now they have been abolished in favor of standard examinations by an ophthalmologist.
“To detect glaucoma at an early stage, you need to measure the level of intraocular pressure, look at the fundus and check the visual field,” said Egorov.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 2.2 billion people in the world live with blindness or other forms of vision impairment. At the same time, 40 percent of blind people lost their sight due to glaucoma. This disease is diagnosed in 60-100 million people, 1.3 million of which are in Russia.
Earlier, an ophthalmologist named possible symptoms of glaucoma. Among them are a feeling of pain, pain and heaviness in the eyes, blurred images, the appearance of colored spots and circles in bright light, as well as a decrease in the field of vision.
