The entry of “external” giants such as Amazon, Netflix and the like into the world of video games has made more than one insider turn up their noses: we report the recent statements of Shawn Laydenex-executive of PlayStation.
“Right now, we see all the big companies go, ‘Oh, games? We can earn billion dollars a year? Then I want a slice too‘. And so we have Google, Netflix, Apple and Amazon wanting to take a slice of the market and trying to disrupt our industry.”
“I hope that video games will be the first sector in which we revolutionize ourselves: where Google or Amazon are not needed to completely reverse the situation. We should be smart enough to predict when these changes are coming and prepare for such an eventuality.”
Strong words those of the ex-manager that are purely of interest the economic aspect of the video game rather than the purely artistic one. The companies mentioned in the speech have had relatively little luck in the gaming world: just think of Google and its Stadia.
Whether they are companies like Amazon and Netflix the future of gaming? They will probably be supporting actors who, over the years, will improve the product offered more and more, hoping that the Stadia flop was a lesson for those who decide to enter the gaming world without the right strategy.
