The State Duma of Russia adopted in the first reading a bill banning gender reassignment surgeries
The State Duma of Russia adopted in the first reading a bill banning gender reassignment surgeries. About it reported on the website of the lower house of parliament.
“It is forbidden to carry out medical interventions aimed at changing the sex of a person, including the formation in a person of primary and (or) secondary sexual characteristics of the other sex,” the document says.
According to the bill, medical workers will be banned from performing gender reassignment operations, except for cases of treatment of congenital physiological anomalies in children, and registry offices will be prohibited from making changes to documents based on medical certificates of gender reassignment.
Deputy Head of the Ministry of Health of Russia Oleg Salagai noted that the department proposes to discuss additional amendments when preparing the bill for the second reading. According to him, this is important to ensure the availability of medical care for citizens with relevant diseases.
The initiative was sponsored by State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin, as well as the leaders of all five factions. According to Volodin, the final version of the document can be adopted in the spring session.
Earlier, State Duma deputy Sultan Khamzaev said that gender reassignment in Russia is unacceptable along with LGBT stories – he stressed that such a position is key.
