Britain’s retired Army Commander and current member of the House of Lords Richard Dannatt said on Tuesday in an interview with the British news channel Sky News that Finland mainly brings “spiritual support” to NATO.
“You asked what Finland brings to NATO – not much in terms of military armament at the moment,” Dannatt answered.
According to him, Finland should be encouraged to invest in its military forces, which would improve the operational capability of NATO as a whole.
“We have taken responsibility for 810 miles (1,300 kilometers) of additional border with Russia,” Dannatt continued.
However, he stated that he was satisfied that Finland joined NATO.
on Twitter the former commander’s statement drew critical comments.
“With all due respect, I think that the Lord in question has limited knowledge of Finland’s military performance”, former Prime Minister of Finland Alexander Stubb wrote.
Head of the Political Department of the Embassy of Finland in the United States Päivi Nevala in turn listed Finland’s military resources: “The largest artillery in Western Europe, more tanks than in Britain, receiving 64 F-35 fighter jets, strong Arctic expertise, wartime strength of 280,000 soldiers, trained reserve of 900,000.”
“More than emotional support, I guess, but I might be biased,” Nevala continued.
