“We have to provide more ammunition that Ukraine needs,” Borrell told a news conference of the European Union’s foreign policy chief before a meeting of EU defense ministers.
Borrell said that the European Union countries are discussing a proposal to increase the production of ammunition and speed up their delivery to Ukraine, noting that “munitions in European countries must be provided to Ukraine quickly.”
Borrell added, “We in Europe must strengthen the defense and military industries.”
Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur said on Wednesday that EU countries would need to decide quickly on new funding to jointly provide ammunition to Ukraine.
“When we provide this new money, this will also increase the capacity of the industry. What we need anyway also for the future is for European industries to be able to produce more munitions,” Pefkor said ahead of a meeting of EU defense ministers in Stockholm.
The ministers will discuss plans to accelerate the supply of 155mm ammunition to Ukraine, which requests more artillery shells to fight Russian forces participating in the special operation in Ukraine, and order more ammunition together.
