Mojang Studios has confirmed that the highly anticipated archeology system will finally arrive in Minecraft with the 1.20 update. The new archeology system will introduce a new set of features and mechanics that were initially revealed years ago, but never implemented. A specific release date for the full version of the update has not yet been confirmed, but it will arrive sometime in 2023. The first iteration of Minecraft’s archeology system will premiere on February 15th.
The developer team has provided a description of archaeology via an official blog post, stating that players can pursue a career as an archaeologist by traveling to a desert.
Mojang Studios reiterated that the archeology is still under development, which means that the new features indicated for now are subject to change. With the release of this update, excavation areas will be added and players will encounter a new block called suspicious sand. Archeology also brings a new tool, the Brush, which allows players to brush the block of suspicious sand. Players will be able to mine whatever is hidden in the new block, which can be anything from random items to pottery shards. Additionally, players will see a partial pattern painted on the pottery shard: four shards create pots.
Also, players will discover the Sniffer eggs. “Pick a nice piece of land near some desert temples and start shoveling. More excavation areas will be added as we continue to work on archeology.” Mojang Studios said in the blog post.
