Years of negotiations over a painting that was accidentally returned to the heirs of an art collector have ended as a settlement has been reached in Austria. The Culture Ministry said on Friday that the heirs of the University of Artifacts, which acquired Gustav Klimt’s painting “Apple Tree II” in 2011 and subsequently sold it, must now pay the Austrian state $11.3 million. The ministry stated that the money will be invested in the “History House” museum in Vienna, which was recently moved.
