Within the framework of the tenth North American Leaders Summitthe head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrardmet with the Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Melanie Joly and the United States Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken.
The three officials agreed to sign the North American Alliance for Racial Inclusion and Equality to work together for the good of minorities in the nations involved.
“This is an agreement that arises because we suddenly find ourselves at the same point. We are three countries that are thinking about something similar in internal politics. It is a great opportunity because you do not have to try to convince anyone of what we have to to do, but to organize ourselves because we are already doing it,” he said.
Likewise, the Mexican foreign minister spoke about the cases of slavery in Mexico that have been present throughout history, in addition to the little diffusion of the subject in society.
“In the case of Mexico, racism is something extremely relevant, racism has not been talked about for a long time. There are many studies now, it is a very important topic, we have also revisited our history regarding slavery that they never tell you anything at school, never In Mexico there was no slavery, but yes, thousands of people lived in this country under slavery.”
“Racism in Mexico synthesizes a lot of social, gender and other inequality, but those two permeate. That is why a great effort has been made to dismantle the culture of racism, it is a culture. It is not a simple issue but it is a fight that we must all have every day”.
In this sense, Ebrard spoke about the situation of indigenous communities in Mexico and the work carried out by the Mexican authorities to get them more involved in society.
“We have 63 living languages, 63 communities. President López Obrador asked to make a very big effort to revisit historical episodes like the one that happened with the Yaquis, who practically exterminated them to defend their waters and their land.”
“In North America we share values associated with more egalitarian, fairer and freer societies. This is very good news and of course I congratulate my colleagues and all those who have made it possible for us to realize that we are in a common cause and that we can work together and together. We have a long way to go”, he concluded.
