World champion Argentina makes a stopover in Rome. But no meeting with Pope Francis
After more than 16 years, the World Cup has returned to Italy. Only for a few hours though: the time for the Argentine national team’s plane to stop at Rome Fiumicino, before continuing on to Buenos Aires, where Messi and his companions are expected at dawn tomorrow.
The stop lasted two hours, without players or staff getting off the plane of the “Aerolineas Argentinas” company, decorated with the image of the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner and the colors of the Albiceleste national team. No visit to the Vatican, as some had anticipated in recent days. The hypothesis was that of a meeting between the team and Pope Bergoglio, a great fan of Argentina, before returning home for the celebrations. Instead, the team remained on the runway of Leonardo da Vinci airport, from which the plane left after refuelling.
