A study of Royal Institute of Technology KTHhas found that cow mucus can be highly effective in treating some sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) such as herpes and human papillomavirus (HPV).
This study has found that the cow mucus can be the basis for creating a kind of prophylactic gel that helps protect against transmission also of HIV and herpes.
So far, this cow snot-based gel has been 70 percent effective in laboratory tests against HIV and 80 percent effective against herpes.
Hongji Yan, who is studying biomaterials at KTH, has said that the cow mucus-based gel can help people better control their sexual health.
He has also found that the molecules of cow mucus, the mucincan gather to trap viral particles and then be eliminated after mucus turnover.
For this, it has been possible to synthetically recreate cow mucus to replicate self-healing and protection for the person when a condom is not available at the time of having a sexual relationship.
