Russian Ambassador to Washington Anatoly Antonov said he visited Russian Viktor Bout in an American prison. He spoke about this on Thursday, September 14.
According to the ambassador, the Russian Bout hopes to return to his homeland and is waiting for Moscow’s decision on this matter.
Antonov also assured Bout that the diplomats would do everything for his speedy return to Russia.
Earlier, on September 12, the head of the press service of the US State Department, Ned Price, said that the United States of America is ready to cooperate with Russia at a high level to release the Americans Brittney Griner and Paul Whelan, who are serving prison sentences in the Russian Federation.
Paul Whelan was detained in Moscow at the end of December 2018. A criminal case was opened against him under the article on espionage (Article 276 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). In mid-June 2020, the Moscow City Court sentenced Whelan to 16 years in a strict regime colony.
American basketball player Brittney Griner was detained in February 2022. Vapes with cannabis oil were found in her hand luggage, after which the athlete was arrested. A criminal case was initiated against Greiner under the article on the smuggling of narcotic drugs in a significant amount. In early August 2022, she was sentenced to nine years in prison and a fine of 1 million rubles.
