Do you want to show someone remotely how you change a certain setting or how much fun that one mobile game is? Make a video recording of your phone screen and forward it. That’s how you work.
A screenshot, where you take an image of your screen, is known to many people. You can usually take a screenshot by pressing the power button and one of your smartphone’s volume buttons at the same time. But also making a short video recording of the screen is easier than you think. For a long time you had to use external apps to get this done, but nowadays it is a standard feature in smartphones.
Are you in doubt between an Android or iPhone? On Best Tested you will discover which phone suits you best.
Record on Android
With a smartphone with the operating system Android 10 or newer, it is possible to make a video recording of your phone screen without too much effort. Here you can choose whether you also want to record audio and whether the touches on the screen are displayed visually. These options are useful if you want to provide the recording with some explanation.
The feature can be turned on from the notification panel. This works in a similar way with almost all manufacturers. From the top of the screen, swipe down twice. With some devices you have to swipe from right to left in the menu. Here you choose ‘Screen recording’ or ‘Screen recorder’. If the function is not listed, press ‘Edit’ and drag the function to the quick settings menu.
To start recording, press ‘Start’ or use the red button that appears in the middle of the screen. With some devices, the recording will only start after a few seconds, after a countdown. To stop the recording, go back to the notifications screen and press ‘Screen Recording’ or ‘Screen Recorder’ again. The video recordings then end up in the Photos or Gallery app.
Capture everything with Apple
If you have a device with iOS 14 or higher, you can take a screen recording of your iPhone. Go to your settings, open ‘Control panel’ and add the function with the green plus icon next to ‘Screen recording’. If the function is not listed, you have probably already added it. When there is a red minus icon next to ‘Screen recording’, you know that the function is set correctly.
Open Control Center by swiping down from the top right corner of your screen. The record button is now located here. You can recognize this by the dot with the circular edge around it. Press this and after the countdown, the recording will start. During recording, the button in the control panel is red, and when using your iPhone you see a red area around the time in the top left. Click this if you want to stop the video recording of your screen. The recording will then appear in the Photos app.
By holding down the record button, you can also share the image live via, for example, Instagram, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams. In this settings screen it is also possible to switch the microphone on or off. By default, the microphone is off. Incoming notifications are also recorded with this feature. If you don’t want this, it’s best to enable a Focus mode such as ‘Do not disturb’. This way you better protect your privacy and you won’t get any unwanted interruptions.
