The clock on the Big Ben tower in London has stopped due to technical reasons. This was announced on August 25 by the British Parliament on its Twitter.
“You may have noticed that the clock on the Elizabeth Tower (the official name of Big Ben – Ed.) Shows the wrong time today. They needed to be paused and reset in order to install some key components. We expect the clock to run correctly later today,” Parliament said.
On April 29, it was reported that the restoration work on the clock faces on Big Ben was completed after a five-year restoration. They again began to show the correct time.
Over the past five years, the 96-meter tower and the clock and bell mechanism inside it have undergone the largest renovation project, the Mail Online newspaper reported. The west dial, which overlooks Parliament Square and St. James’s Park, was shut down at the beginning of the renovation and removed from the tower to prevent damage to the hands and mechanism while repairs were being made.
Big Ben’s refurbishment bill could have been as high as £80 million. In the course of the repairs, it turned out that the damage caused by the German bombing during World War II was more significant than had been thought.
The tower was completed in 1858 by English architect Augustus Pugin. It is a monument of the Victorian era and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. In 2012, in honor of the 60th anniversary of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, the tower was named after her.
