Every June 20, International Refugee Day is commemorated, a date to take stock of the situation of people who are forced to flee their homes. According to UNHCR, the number of people displaced by wars, violence, persecution and human rights violations amounted to 89.3 million at the end of 2021. However, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has caused this figure to rise over 100 million people currently displaced.
On February 24, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began, an event that triggered one of the largest and fastest forced displacement crises since World War II, raising the number of displaced people to over 100 million. Africa, Latin America, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria remain the hotspots.
Are the measures put in place so far inadequate to combat forced displacement? How much commitment is there from governments and organizations to reverse the situation? Is displacement and humanitarian crises of this kind becoming normalized? The situation of refugees and displaced people in the world is the topic that we analyze in this edition of El Debate together with our guests:
– Sibylla Brodzinsky, regional spokesperson for UNHCR in the Americas.
– Virginia Álvarez, head of Domestic Policy and researcher on migration at Amnesty International, Spain.
