Coalition Juntos wins 245 seats in parliament, 44 fewer than needed to govern more peacefully
President Emmanuel Macron lost his absolute majority in the National Assembly. The Juntos (Ensemble!, in French) coalition won 245 seats in Parliament. Despite having won the largest number of seats, he needed 289 to govern with more tranquility.
Next came Nupes, led by left-wing Jean-Luc Mélenchon, with 131 deputies. Right-wing Marine Le Pen’s National Regroupment won 89 seats.
The French went to the polls for the 2nd round of legislative elections on Sunday (19.jun). You results were released by the Ministry of the Interior on Monday (20.jun.2022).
The election was seen as a “3rd round” of presidential elections for Macron. The French president won re-election on April 24 with votes from the left, which campaigned against Le Pen.
The result represents a setback for Macron and his reform agenda. Among the agendas defended by the centrist are greater integration of the EU (European Union), raising the retirement age and investments in the French nuclear industry. Without an absolute majority, the politician will need to negotiate with the other parties for the next 5 years.
In the first round held last Sunday (June 12), Macron’s ticket won a narrow victory over the leftist Nupes coalition. It was 25.75% against 25.66%. A difference of only 0.09%. While the National Regroupment, Le Pen’s party, won 18.68% of the votes.
