As an enthusiast you want to know everything about the history of your car. So when we read at the Consumers’ Association that the vehicle history up to nine years ago can now be requested free of charge from the RDW, we were immediately enthusiastic. Unfortunately, it is a little less exciting than we hoped. It is not about a nice printout of your car, but about an overview of the cars that you have owned in recent years.
You could already request an overview of all license plates registered in your name from the RDW, but for 4.65 euros. According to the Consumers’ Association, the fact that it costs money was against the law and the association went to the Dutch Data Protection Authority (AP). They were right and that is why you can now download an overview for free.
We did it for a while, and it’s not all that exciting. After logging in with your DigiD, you will receive an overview of all vehicles plus their registration numbers that have been in your possession for the past nine years. Nice for an ‘oh I had that too’ moment. The data can be requested via the special website of the RDW with the inspired name ‘overview of vehicles by name up to 9 years ago†
And what about the odometer reading of my car?
If you were hoping that it was an overview of the odometer readings of your car, then we have good news. This overview was already available for free download from the RDW website. With each visit to the garage, the number of kilometers driven by your car is registered and added to this overview. This list of odometer readings is nice to have, but it is useful, for example, if you want to sell your car and prove that the odometer reading is okay.
