Belarus may “soon” join Russia in its war against Ukraine. This was reported by CNN, citing NATO sources who underline that the country bordering the north with Ukraine is already preparing. “Putin needs support, anything helps,” a NATO source told the American broadcaster, explaining that Belarusian involvement is increasingly “likely”.
Belarusian opposition sources explained that Minsk combat units are ready to enter Ukraine within days, with thousands of troops prepared to deploy. These sources then underline that such a move would have a greater geopolitical effect than the actual military one, given that it would be the actual entry of another country into the war.
The Alliance also believes, the sources cited by CNN continue, that the Belarusian government is “preparing an environment to justify the attack on Ukraine”. US sources, cited by the American broadcaster, however, underline that the Pentagon sees “no indication that the Belarusians are preparing to enter Ukraine or that they have made agreements to this effect”.
The NATO sources conclude by explaining that the final decision of the Belarusian involvement will be taken only by Moscow: “This is not what Lukashenko wants – they add referring to the Belarusian president – the question is whether Putin wants another unstable country in the region, because the war would destabilize Belarus “.
The sources give no indication on what kind of intervention could come from Minsk, but CNN points out that it would make sense for Russia to try to block military aid arriving in Kiev from its western border.
