The reticulum of veins on the lower limbs is not only an aesthetic problem, but the signal of a non-optimal peripheral venous circulation. If the vessels dilate and the venous return to the heart is difficult, over time you could experience serious disorders
A women’s worry? Not really: the tangle of capillaries clearly visible on the legs not only an aesthetic problem that leads many to eliminate all the skirts from the wardrobe. First, because it does not only affect women: according to a review of studies on the subject, conducted some time ago by researchers at the University of Michigan from Ann Arbor, the prevalence of varicose veins can reach up to 76 percent over the course of life. of a woman, but the problem is certainly not unknown to the sit masculine given that the estimated prevalence reaches 56 percent. Men perhaps pay less attention to it and only worry about it when the capillaries have already become varices, that is, very dilated, tortuous, swollen and raised veins on the skin, but they are not immune to it. And underestimating the problem is a big problem because having capillaries or varicose veins indicate a circulation disorder and as such should not be neglected. in fact the first sign of the venous disease chronic, a condition in which the return of venous blood, rich in carbon dioxide, to the heart is more difficult than necessary because capillaries, venules and leg veins dilate permanently, thus becoming gradually more and more evident under the skin.
Chronic disease
As Alessia Dossena, vascular surgeon and head of Vein & Derma Clinic at the Citt Institute of Pavia explains, Visible capillaries can be the tip of the iceberg of a circulatory problem which can then lead to serious disturbances and complications. In the lower limbs the venous circulation that brings the blood back to the heart it has to travel a longer distance than any other part of the body, moreover working against the force of gravity: all this involves a greater effort to push the blood from the legs towards the trunk. To do this we exploit the pump effect of the foot and calf muscles: when we walk, pressing on the ground causes the blood to be squeezed rhythmically from the peripheral tissues towards the heart. In addition, in the venous vessels there are dovetail valves that allow the blood to rise but block its relapse downwards. When the vessels dilate, as happens in the case of varicose veins, these valves are no longer able to oppose the reflux of blood which therefore stagnates in the peripheral vessels. like a tree on the contrary, in which the flow goes from the twigs to the trunk: when for any reason the blood goes back downwards, even the collateral vessels gradually wear out and dilate. Thus the capillaries become visible like a bluish-red spider web on the skin, then over time the larger caliber venules and therefore the veins can also swell; when the stagnation of blood becomes consistent, the dilated and gnarled vessels literally touch each other with the hand.
Risk factors
The very frequent disorder and some risk factors facilitate its appearance, as specified by Domenico Baccellieri, director of the Vein Center – Center for Diagnosis, Treatment and Research of Venous Pathologies at the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan: There is an individual susceptibility linked to genetics, therefore, familiarity greatly affects the likelihood of varicose veins. Another non-modifiable risk factor is sex (female hormones seem able to relax the venous walls and make the valves less efficient, ed); also there pregnancy the likelihood of varicose veins increases because the uterus, which swells during gestation, causes the veins in the pelvis to dilate and temporarily makes the venous return to the heart more complex. then those who have a job that forces them to move on are more at risk standing many hours a day, because during the day the valves of the vessels of the lower limbs are subjected to continuous stress, secondary to an increase in pressure due to gravity, and this inevitably translates into an overload of blood volume. Also there sedentary it favors varicose veins, because without adequate movement the function of “squeezing” the blood by the muscles of the legs is not exploited; moreover, correct breathing during physical activity is equally useful because it creates a sort of vacuum in the chest which helps to draw blood upwards. then a risk factor is overweight, which presses on the lower limbs and worsens peripheral circulation, forcing the veins to work harder to push blood towards the heart.
Exercise
Although it is impossible to be sure that you will not run into varicose veins sooner or later, much can be done to reduce the likelihood by exercising regularly and following a diet healthy and balanced, in which to avoid too salty foods: salt, recalling liquids, increases the pressure in general and also the venous pressure in the lower limbs, increasing the effort necessary for the blood to rise. Better then not to sit or stand for too many hours in a row and if you are forced to wear compression stockings, which give an extra boost to the venous return and offer a containment to the pressure overload: thus they can reduce the symptoms of chronic venous disease. and prevent complications, Dossena notes. Often the problem does not give any other sign than the visible capillaries, but when many vessels are involved and the stagnation of blood begins to become consistent, it is possible to have discomfort such as the sensation of heavy legs or swelling of the feet and ankles, especially in the evening and especially in the warmer months, when the vasodilation induced by high temperatures increases the volume of blood that reaches the periphery, including the legs.
