The American streaming giant Netflix announced on Wednesday that it will test in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru to charge a fee to subscribers who share their account with people who live in other households.
Customers will have to pay a monthly subscription fee ($3 in Chile and Costa Rica and 2.12 in Peru) to add up to two accounts to their profile.
“We’ve always made it easy for people who live together to share their account, with features like separate profiles and simultaneous streaming for our standard and premium subscribers,” Chengyi Long, Chief Innovation Officer, said in a statement.
“These extremely popular features have also created some confusion about when and how Netflix can be shared,” explained Chengyi. As a result, “accounts are shared by different households, which affects our ability to invest in quality series and movies for our subscribers.”
The Californian group will propose in the three countries a service that will allow the transfer of a profile to a new account, in order to motivate the beneficiaries of shared access to create their own subscription.
After a long period of tolerance, Netflix seems ready to close the siege, at a time when its growth is compromised. The company, which added 8.2 million subscribers between September and December, ended the year with 221 million and faces increasing competition from Disney+.
